The Decameron | Pasolini 100 at Edinburgh Filmhouse

Pasolini 100

Two special screenings mark the centenary of the birth of Italian film director, poet, writer and intellectual Pier Paolo Pasolini, in association with Edinburgh Filmhouse.

The Decameron (Il Decameron)

Friday, 18th March 2022 at 8.25 pm

Filmhouse, Cinema 2

A richly textured epic based on eight varied and colourful tales by 14th-century Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio. The stories Pasolini chooses to tell are characterised by two main conflicts: between the individual and social or religious dogma, and between the opportunist and his gullible victim. Pasolini weaves the stories together into a bawdy tapestry of a medieval Italy populated by artists, priests and magicians. Appearing in the role of the great pre-Renaissance painter Giotto, Pasolini himself guides the viewer through a cinematic landscape ripe with sensuality and irreverent humour.

This screening will be introduced by Dr Emanuela Patti (Italian Studies, University of Edinburgh).
