‘Producing Living Countenances from Marble’: Rhetoric, Technology and Art in Trecento Italy

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

Speaker Dr Luca Palozzi – British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Teaching Fellow, University of Edinburgh

This talk explores Italian poet and intellectual Petrarch’s remarkable involvement with, and understanding of, the technical aspects of stone carving and tomb sculpture in particular.

While we traditionally conceive of the Latinate culture of early Italian intellectuals and the vernacular culture of Trecento sculptural workshops as distant and non-communicating realms; this talk suggests that meaningful exchanges of ideas between these Trecento writers and contemporary sculptors were not only possible but, indeed, must have taken place, leading to the revival of veristic portraiture – and of what we now call ‘naturalism’ – in the West.
