#StayTunedOnIt #7

While we are closed to public, we would like to take you on a journey aimed to discover the best classics of Italian literature chosen from the audiobooks collection “Ad alta voce” broadcasted in Italian by Rai Radio 3.

Our seventh choice is “Il codice di Perelà” by Aldo Palazzeschi read by Paolo Poli.

Aldo Palazzeschi (1885–1974) had a distinguished career as a writer of essays, stories, novels, and poems. He started to publish poems and novels at the age of 20.

He won particular acclaim for the novels Sorelle Materassi (The Materassi Sisters) (1934), I fratelli Cuccoli (The Cuccoli Brothers) (1948), and Roma (1953).

Palazzeschi’s early avant-garde work, the anti-novel Il codice di Perelà (The Man of Smoke) (1911) becomes the central metaphor around whom the author intertwines his tragicomic play between lightness and heaviness. Palazzeschi offers an existential vision of human life that stands alongside the works of Pirandello, Svevo or Calvino.

“…Vi lascio queste scarpe, ancora belle e lucide. È quanto io posseggo e che vi posso lasciare. Valevo questo paio di scarpe che vi lascio. Eccole. Mi chiamaste coi nomi più lusinghieri, mi strisciaste i vostri inchini più riverenti, mi adoraste come una reliquia o come un santo sopra all’altare. Poi vi siete accorti che non valevo un gran che e mi avete disprezzato, calpestato come un rettile immondo, coperto di ingiurie e mi voleste lontano per sempre..”

Buon ascolto!
