University of St Andrews’ students of Italian Theatre are putting on a virtual, English production of Carlo Goldoni’s 18th century comedy La Scozzese.
The play will be shown for free through the Byre Theatre’s website from Friday 28th May 2021 at 5.00 pm (BST) to Sunday 30th May at 10.00 am (BST).
Performed to English-speaking audiences for the first time, you can experience a hidden gem by one of Italy’s most prominent playwrights, Carlo Goldoni.
Carlo Goldoni’s La Scozzese (The Scottish Lady), a comedy in five acts, premiered on 3 November 1761 at the Teatro San Luca in Venice and comes to St Andrews in partnership with the Department of Italian of the University of St Andrews.
For this first ever translation into English, Goldoni’s classic drama of romantic tribulations, hidden identity, and social aristocracy is brought to life in a new, online production. Supported by lecturer Dr Robert Wilson, head of the Italian Department, the small group of students have been working hard to translate the original script into English and stage the performance.
Set in 18th century London, discover the identity of this mysterious Scottish Lady. Why is she staying at a London inn? And who is the mysterious stranger who has just arrived at the London docks?
