Carnevale Latino

Carnevale Latino is a dance workshop that will raise awareness and revive the spirit of Carnival, presenting some of the apotropaic rites and traditions of clear Greek-Roman origins. Participants will be invited to get a pair of “castanets” or other percussion instruments. They will be taught to use, decorate and dance with them. Each will be invited to bring handkerchiefs or shawls, indispensable for pizzica choreography. The workshop participants will be invited to try a few dance steps. The precise explanation of each movement and the appropriate music will show the deep peasant and “pagan” meaning that makes these dances not only a moment of purely folk fun but also a key to better understand the soul of Latin people. Courtship, challenge and fun dances are just some of the definitions that can be given to explain the complexity of a ritual that has survived to the present day. The experience ends with a tarantella processionale or “Montemaranese”, the quintessence of theCarnival celebrations, which aims to revive the deep sense of connection in the community through the dance figures. The workshop will be led by the folk dances teacher Lara Russo with the help of Laura Landi.

The Performers

Lara Russo: Music and dances of southern Italy are part of her own family history. She’s always being part of the folk dance celebrations of her native territory: “Agro Nocerino-Sarnese”. Over the years she has been part of many folk music and dances festivals in Italy and abroad, enriching her experience with the study of traditional French and Northern European dances. From 2013 she is a founding member of ‘Edinbal’ cultural association, based in Edinburgh. This association promotes the popularization of European traditional music and dances in Scotland. In this context, she leads numerous workshops on folk dances of Southern Italy, in collaboration with the Italian band group “Badwills”.

Laura Landi has been engaged in the field of communication and events organisation for 6 years, she has worked for several festivals, including the Ravello Festival, of international scope. Passionate about popular culture, she discovered tammurriata, tarantella and pizzica seven years ago, under the guidance of the teacher Milena Acconcia, and has followed her passion ever since. She likes to propose folk dances in new contexts, such as weddings and ceremonies. After moving to Belfast she shifted her interests to the Irish and Breton folk dances, participating in events organised by the Monegasque teacher Vanessa Franchetti. After being forced to hang up her dancing shoes for a while because of two injuries, she can’t wait to present folk dances to Belfast audience with her partner, Lara Russo.
