Italian and Scottish Crime Fiction; The giallo and the Tartan Noir

A Discussion between Denise Mina and Valerio Varesi, Joe Farrell in the chair

Denise Mina is the internationally renowned author of many Glasgow-based crime stories such as the Garnethill and Resolution, where the investigator was Maureen O’Donnell, and of the five-volume series featuring the free-lance journalist, Paddy Meehan. Mina’s work is ‘crime writing as morality tale’ (Guardian), in which she creates a gallery of strong characters and provides a fearless investigation of man’s inhumanity to woman.

Valerio Varesi is a journalist with La Repubblica. He is author of a trilogy of novels which subject Italy’s post-war history to critical examination, as well as of a series of crime stories featuring the tormented commissario Soneri. A Woman Much Missed, the fourth to be published in English by MacLehose Press, opens with the murder of a landlady in Parma, Varesi’s native city, but widens out to denounce civic corruption and misgovernment in Italy. The boarding house where the crime was committed is also a place of poignant, personal memories which Soneri is compelled unwillingly to confront.
