THE VENETIAN GHETTO

The word ghetto is a Venetian dialect word which has gained international currency. On 29 March, 1516 the Most Serene Republic of Venice decreed that one area of the city be given over to the Jewish community as their exclusive place of residence, or of confinement. The ghetto is sited in the Cannaregio district, on an island whose entrances were locked at nights and whose surrounding canals were patrolled by guards whose salary was paid by the Jewish community.

However, the ghetto became a centre of Jewish culture where Jews, Sephardic and Ashkenazi, were free to worship according to their own traditions. The gates were removed by Napoleon’s army, but the ghetto’s connections with Jewish past and present are strong.

The establishment of the ghetto in Venice 500 years ago will be marked by a round table discussion in the Italian Cultural Institute on 9 June, with a panel of expert speakers, each of whom has written on Venetian history.
