Responsible Technology: are we ready for it?

Technology is at the heart of the world where we live providing food and drinking water, electricity, goods and services. Emerging technologies rise fast carrying the potential to deliver economic and social benefits to a world that is challenged to sustain 10 billion people. Engineering and technological and scientific achievements pose challenges and opportunities; the fast growing of computers, communication technologies and artificial intelligence, for example, is changing the way we work and think, impacting on human activities and ways of living.

A series of events, providing the opportunity to debate how global responsibility is embedded in technological solutions and how the ethical dimension affects the way scientists and engineers work, is scheduled towards 2020. The format of the event includes a short presentation by scientists working in one of the chosen relevant technological areas, followed by a discussion panel chaired by Raffaella Ocone.

In the first event of the series “My health, My home, My data?" Daniele Faccio, in conversation with Raffaella Ocone, will explain how Artificial Intelligence and research into new sensing technologies are moving towards new concepts for healthcare that are centred on the individual. The event will look at how these technologies might change the home of the future into an intelligent environment that collects data, operating in the background and building a continuously updated picture of you and your health. This data can then be used for various functions, ranging from choosing background music based on your mood to capturing the early onset of problems and diseases.

Daniele Faccio is a Royal Academy Chair in Emerging Technologies and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He joined the University of Glasgow in 2017 as Professor in Quantum Technologies and is adjunct professor at the University of Arizona, Tucson (USA). From 2013-2017, he was professor and deputy director of the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences at Heriot-Watt University. He has been visiting scientist at MIT (USA), Marie-Curie fellow at ICFO, Barcelona (Spain) and EU-ERC fellow 2012-2017. He was awarded several funds and prizes. His research focuses on the physics of light to answer fundamental questions and on how we harness light to improve society.

Raffaella Ocone obtained her first degree in Chemical Engineering from the Università di Napoli, Italy and her MA and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, USA. She holds the Chair of Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University (HWU) since 1999, where she is the Head of the Multiphase Multiscale Engineering Modelling (MMEM) research group. She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2007 she was conferred the title of Cavaliere (Knight) of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity from the Italian Republic. In The Queen’s 2019 New Year Honours she was appointed OBE for services to engineering. She has worked in a number of institutions in Italy, France, Germany and the USA. Her main area of research is in the field of modelling complex (multi-phase) reactive systems. Raffaella has taken an active role in the teaching of ethics to engineering students.
