AIRITalks, Where Science Meets People | GMO or OMG?!! Debunking false myths around genetically modified organisms

AIRItalks is back! In 2020 the collaboration between AIRIcerca, the Italian Istitute of Culture and the Consulate General of Italy in Edinburgh will bring you a new series of informal and informative talks, which will focus on the social and ethical impact of scientific research.

In this first appointment with AIRItalks, Fulvia Draicchio and Federico Lubrani will discuss a hot topic of our days: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

In her talk, Fulvia Draicchio will analyse the myths and misconceptions around the GMOs; she will bring also practical examples about which GMOs are currently cultivated, why, and where. What is a GMO? Are GMOs “unnatural”? Can GMOs be useful or dangerous for us? Are they good for our health? These and many other questions will be addressed during the event.

Federico Lubrani’s talk will take into consideration multidisciplinary analysis that has emerged over three decades of GM crop use around the globe. In a narrative too often influenced by generalised statements about the benefits or adverse effects of genetically engineered crops, are we now able to take an informed view on whether this approach to agriculture will save the world from starvation?

Dr Fulvia Draicchio - Department of Life Sciences, University of Roehampton, London – graduated in Biotechnology (2011) and got a master in Industrial Biotechnology (2013). She then obtained a PhD in Plant Genetic and Crop breeding at the University of Dundee (2013-2017), focused on genetic modification of barley crop. She recently moved into human physiology and metabolism, and currently she is working on diabetes and metabolic disorders at the University of Roehampton, London.

Federico Lubrani is a freelance lecturer, tutor and public engagement specialist. He graduated from the University of Roma Tre in Rome with a Masters degree in History of Art, specialising in History and Theory of Conservation. Since moving to Scotland in 2014, Federico has been a member of ICON Scotland, RSA and ICOM-CC, and now chairs Slow Food Glasgow, he is part of the national board of Slow Food Scotland and of the coordination of the Cooks Alliance.”
