#StayTunedOnIt #8 | Phil Cooke on Ada Gobetti

For #StayTunedOnIt, we continue a series of videos of artists, musicians, theatre practitioners, academics, writers (and many more) who have collaborated with the Institute in the past or who were collaborating with us while things came to a halt.

Today we remember la Festa della Liberazione – the Anniversary of the Liberation – through the words of Professor Philip Cooke.

“25 April 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Italy and is a national holiday – a festa nazionale. It was the 25 April 1945 that Milan, one of the great ‘Resistance Cities’ was liberated. The 25 April is customarily celebrated in street demonstrations all over Italy but this year, of course, there will be no large public gatherings. The National Resistance Institute and the various partisan associations, in particular ANPI, have not allowed the current crisis to dampen spirits and have looked for alternative ways to celebrate this key day. This short video is part of my own contribution to the celebrations and focusses on the figure of Ada Gobetti, who made an exemplary contribution to the organisation of the Resistance in and around Turin, becoming deputy Mayor of the city in the immediate post-war. Glasgow, where I live and work, is twinned with Turin. I would like to thank my research student, Emanuela Romeo, for her help with the map. La Resistenza continua!”
