Italian Renaissance

Fare Cinema 2022 dedicates a section, entitled Italian Renaissance, to some of the most significant protagonists of the new extraordinary season of Italian cinema, subject of renewed and growing attention by specialized critics and international festivals.

Five short films by both established and emerging Italian directors are available for a week on the MyMovies to the public following the exhibition from abroad: a selection of titles that offers a fresh and transversal look on contemporary reality, telling stories all very different from each other. Thanks to the great variety of styles and themes, these works can return a colorful and complex image of the world in which we live, using an original and innovative cinematic language, even when reworking techniques and models of the past.

"Tiger Boy" by Gabriele Mainetti
Gabriele Mainetti, who won the audience with the great success of his debut film "Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot" and with the subsequent "Freaks Out", participates to Fare Cinema with his sixth short film, "Tiger Boy".

"Oggi gira così" by Sydney Sibilia
Sydney Sibilia, author of the successful trilogy "Smetto quando voglio", intervenes with his "Oggi gira così".

"Sugarlove" by Laura Luchetti
"Sugarlove" is an animated short film by Laura Luchetti, winner of the “Corto d'Argento” in 2019 as best short film for animation.

"Esca Viva" by Susanna Nicchiarelli
Susanna Nicchiarelli, director winner of the "Nastro dell’Anno" 2021 with her "Miss Marx", participates with the animated short "Esca Viva".

"Il mio dovere di sposa" by Claudio Giovannesi
The overview is completed with "Il mio dovere di sposa", one of the nine short stories that make up the collective work "9x10 Novanta", produced in 2014 to celebrate the 90th birthday of the “Istituto Luce”. The author is Claudio Giovannesi, an established artist on the national and international scene, winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the Berlin Film Festival 2019 with "La paranza dei bambini".

Curated by Fondazione Cinema per Roma, each of the five directors also participates with an in-depth video interview conducted by Mario Sesti. An introductory frame is offered by a conversation with Pappi Corsicato, on the basis of his appreciated thirty-year experience. The interviews will remain freely accessible without a time limit on Italiana Vimeo channel.

Italian Screens

As in most recent editions, this year the finalists of the "Best Short Film" category of David di Donatello, whose award ceremony was held last May 3, participate in Fare Cinema. Thanks to the collaboration with the Accademia del Cinema Italiano and ANICA, in the week from 13 to 19 June the films will be visible from all over the world on MyMovies.

Winner of the award was Nico Bonomòlo with "Maestrale", an animation short that recounts the journey of a man fighting between reality and dream. The theme of the journey is also taken up by "Pilgrims", by Farnoosh Samadi and Ali Asgari, the story of the desperate "pilgrimage" of two children to find their mother. Tommaso Santambrogio and Valerio Ferrara, directors respectively of "L’ultimo spegne la luce” and “Notte romana”, explores the theme of a couple’s relationship, certainly never easy and never predictable, often undermined by internal misunderstandings or external hostilities. Finally, Camilla Caré’s "Diorama" broadens the analysis of the relational dynamics within the family, recounting the tragedy of a family destroyed by its own neuroses.

Five different short features, all reflecting on life, its purpose, the people who enter and leave, the fear of losing and the hope of finding.

Omaggio a Vittorio Gassman

In the fifth edition of Fare Cinema, a special section curated by Fondazione Cinema per Roma is dedicated to Vittorio Gassman, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. A tribute to the "showman", central figure of the Italian theater and cinema of the 20th century, through a professional and personal portrait, from which shines the vulnerable and reserved man hidden behind the great artistic personality.

A conversation specially created with Alessandro Gassmann, son of Vittorio and protagonist of the Italian scene of recent years, who presents the versatile father figure to the audience of the Italiana Vimeo channel.

Alessandro Gassmann’s speech also introduces the screening (limited to the audience connected from abroad on MyMovies) of the documentary "Sono Gassman! Vittorio re della commedia", written and directed by Fabrizio Corallo.

The movie, winner of the “Nastro d'Argento” and the Flaiano Prize, recalls the intense existence of the great actor and director, reconstructed through interviews with family, colleagues and friends, pieces of films (in particular, films of the golden years of the "Italian comedy") and archive theater performances.

In addition to films from that time, many valuable testimonies of fellow workers - together with the unpublished contributions of the four children - recreate the extraordinary professionalism and magnetism of Gassman.

Pasolini 100

To contribute to the celebrations of the centenary of the birth of Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922 - 1975), the Farnesina has commissioned a series of videos to the Cineteca di Bologna, designed to introduce the screenings and exhibitions dedicated to Pasolini organized by Cultural Institutes, Italian Embassies and Consulates in the most diverse cinemas in the world.

An unusual image of the multifaceted artist and his work emerges from cut scenes, interviews on sets and even testimonies of directors and intellectuals who recall and comment on his masterpieces. These precious archive materials are accompanied by a series of original video introductions to Pasolini’s filmography, by authors, actors, critics and film historians.

On the occasion of Fare Cinema, a selection of these introductions is available on the ITALIANA Vimeo channel:

  • Roberto Chiesi presents “Accattone”
  • Riccardo Costantini presents “Che cosa sono le nuvole?”
  • Anna Masecchia presents “Teorema”
  • Emiliano Morreale presents “Comizi d’amore”
  • Marco Antonio Bazzocchi presents “Appunti per un’Orestiade Africana”
