Photonic technologies make use of light for a myriad of applications such as: transmitting data at ultra-fast speed, exploring biochemical systems, triggering nuclear reactions, looking into the furthest galaxies, manipulating quantum effects, and much more!

During the last decade, photonics has produced one in every three physics Nobel laureates and developed into a huge global market whose products permeate every single aspect of our life.

Despite all these remarkable facts, the level of public awareness about this fascinating discipline is quite low and the scientific community believes it is time to invest more in promoting photonic knowledge to the non-experts.

Along this line, during a 50 min talk, Dr. Marcello Ferrera (Heriot-Watt University) will introduce you to the ultra-fast world and how scientists engineer and measure events happening on a time scale of a billionth of a millionth of a second.

In very simplified terms, Dr. Ferrera will also report about the most recent scientific achievements that his research team has attained towards novel materials for application in ultra-fast physics.

Dr. Marcello Ferrera is Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University, Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences, in Edinburgh. Here, alongside teaching Optics and Photonics, he supervises several research activities in the field of integrated Photonics, Nonlinear Optics, and Quantum Physics.

A social refreshment will follow the event.

Event organised in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
