Mediterraneo: Carnevale 2023! With The Badwills, Dias Brazil, and Omar Afif

Med Carn 2023 online

Mediterraneo and Nothing Ever Happens Here Present Carnevale 2023, a huge masquerade featuring Italian Pizzica, Brazilian Jazz and Moroccan Gnawa. A night of live music and dance to shake the winter blues away in style on Saturday 18th February at Summerhall (8.30 doors; live music 8.30pm – 1am).

We have reached ten years (10 years!) of Carnevale at Summerhall, Mediterraneo’s own celebration of madness and mischief, of the world turned upside down. It is that time of the year when the Fool rules in town, Harlequin the servant turns master, and every Mask hides a trick, a prank, a joke.

The time to go wild. The time to don your best costume and disguise of choice. The time to shine your dancing shoes and dance the madness away.

THE BADWILLS

Hosting the night, Edinburgh’s one and only Pizzica, Tarantella & Tammurriata band The Badwills have entranced Scotland with their powerful mix of Southern Italian music and rhythms and Scotch-Irish vibes for more than ten years. From Orkney to the Borders, from the fields to the theatres and the streets, noone has been able to resist the bite of the tarantula. Come ready to dance, to sing, to dream.

DIAS BRAZIL

Opening the night, Dias Brazil bring you the best of samba and bossa, a funky take on classic Brazilian rhythms, with a whole host of traditional instruments and Latin American folk talent accompanied by a tight Scottish rhythm section. Mediterraneo’s homage to the Carnevale in Rio.

OMAR AFIF & GNAWA TRANCE FUSION

Closing the night, the entrancing sounds of Moroccan Gnawa, brought to you by an international cast of Scotland-based musicians. Combining Berber, Arabic and Islamic rhythms from North Africa with instruments from all over the world, and led by the sound of the three-stringed Guembri and traditional percussion, Omar Afif’s ensemble’s Gnawa will capture your soul and fire up your feet.
