With the support of the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh, Elvira Notari: Beyond Silence will be presented at the University of Edinburgh (Lecture Theatre A, 40 George Square) on Thursday, 30th April at 17:15. Directed by Valerio Ciriaci, the documentary premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in the Venice Classics section and is produced by Parallelo 41 Produzioni, Awen Films and Luce Cinecittà.
Blending archival research, surviving fragments of Notari’s cinema, and reflections from contemporary artists and scholars, the film retraces the life, work and legacy of Elvira Notari, the pioneering Neapolitan filmmaker widely recognized as Italy’s first woman film director. The screening offers an opportunity to rediscover a major figure in early film history and to reflect on what it means to restore a woman filmmaker to cultural memory today.
The screening will be introduced by Professor Marion Schmid (University of Edinburgh) and Stefano De Angelis (Director, Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh). It will then be followed by a Q&A with Valerio Ciriaci (director), Antonella Di Nocera (producer) and Dr Chiara Quaranta (University of Edinburgh).
Special thanks to Loreta Gandolfi (Film Curator & Affiliated Lecturer in Film, University Of Cambridge) for her support of this event.
