Scotland’s curriculum is evolving. Since June 2025, over 200 colleagues have been involved in updating the Languages curriculum, led by colleagues from Education Scotland. This presentation by Andrew McCulloch and Robbie Kirk, National Advisers – Languages for Education Scotland will provide an update on the work undertaken so far and how it will support improved language learning experiences for Scotland’s learners.
The European Day of Languages is celebrated each year on 26 September. It was established in 2001 at the joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. Through this action, some 700 million citizens across the Council of Europe’s 46 member states are encouraged to discover and learn languages at any age, whether within formal education or alongside it. This reflects the shared conviction of the Council of Europe and the European Commission that linguistic diversity is a powerful means of fostering intercultural understanding and a fundamental component of Europe’s rich cultural heritage.
In Scotland, the European Day of Languages is hosted by the Institut français d’Ecosse and organised with the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh, Czech School Scotland CIC, Consulate General of the Republic of Poland, Consulate General of Romania, Goethe Institute, Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Conradh Na Gaeilge – Consulate General of Ireland, Embassy of Spain.
