A celebration of Europe Day

Europa, our First Migrant
Thursday 9 May, 5.30pm

Playwright Maggie Rose and author Salvatore Cabras will explore the original meaning of the term ‘Europa/Europe’. Along this path they revisit the Greek myth of ‘The Rape of Europa’ and its symbolic implications. The figure of Europa appears in statuettes, bas-reliefs, frescos, mosaics, vases, paintings, coins, and everyday items. It is certainly among the most frequent subjects represented artistically through the ages. The talk, accompanied by images, will chart their journey of discovery and creative process.

Women of Molise

Director Agapito Di Pilla will introduce and screen his film ‘Women of Molise’ (60 mins) which follows the photographic journey of photographer Frank Monaco in 1950 through rural Italy to document the lives of women affected by migration.

Followed by Q+A and discussion.

Migrant Pathways: Historical diversity in the Italian experience
Friday 10 May, 6pm

Presentations by Rosanna Carnevale (publisher, Cosmo lannone) and writer Nicoletta Franchi (author, La Via della Scozia, published by Fondazione Paolo Cresci) which examine the motivations and circumstances which stimulated migration to Scotland during the late 19th century and question some of the cultural stereotypes that have become established.

SOS Arandora Star

Director Anna Chiappa (Canada) will introduce her film ‘SOS Arandora Star’. Followed by screening and Q+A and discussion.

Alien Policies & the Italian Experience during WWII
Tuesday 14 May, 2-5pm
Italian Cultural Institute, 82 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh

Dr. Wendy Ugolini (University of Edinburgh) will discuss UK immigration policy and the treatment of migrant groups 1905-45 with Anna Chiappa (Canada) who continues the morning presentation to further consider the impact of the sinking of the Arandora Star. Ron McQuaid (Napier University) and Ignazio Cabras (University of York), who will illustrate the phenomenon of labour-related migration from Scotland after WWII and in particular on secondary migration by immigrants already settled in Scotland.

Followed by Q+A and discussion.
