Black Souls (Anime Nere)

In rural Calabria, Southern Italy, the ‘Ndrangheta organisation operate a vast and lucrative network of drug trafficking, extortion and money laundering. Based on Gioacchino Craico’s novel, Black Souls is a fictionalised morality tale that leads us into the dark and sinister world of this very real mafia world, in which violence and vendetta are inherited from generation to generation. Using a blend of professional and non-professional actors, Munzi’s film focuses primarily on three brothers – Luigi (Marco Leonardi), Rocco (Peppino Mazzotta) and Luciano (Fabrizio Ferracane) Carbone – who become engaged in an escalating blood feud with a rival family, recently reignited through the impetuous actions of Luciano’s son.
