Breath | Italian Clapperboard

Film 3

Thursday 28 May 2026, 17:30
Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh

The documentary screening series Italian Clapperboard continues on Thursday, 28 May at 17:30 at the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh with Breath (Ilaria Congiu, 72′,2025).

An emotional and intimate journey, directed by Ilaria Congiu, that explores climate change, pollution, and industrial fishing through the eyes of those who have witnessed the sea change.

Born in Senegal, where her father runs a frozen fish export company, Ilaria grows up with the sea as a friend. Over time, however, she realizes that the waters she loved are becoming increasingly silent and devoid of life. With a deep sense of loss, she begins to question whether her family’s business might be contributing to the depletion of the oceans. Driven by a search for truth, the director embarks on a journey through Italy, Tunisia, and Senegal, where she meets five “children of the sea” who push her to confront her father and to reflect on the contradictions tied to consumerism and industrial fishing.

Through personal stories and firsthand testimonies, Breath becomes a work that weaves together factual and emotional storytelling, revealing the social and environmental repercussions of the ecological crisis. A documentary that explores the difficult path toward acceptance, forgiveness, and, above all, awareness. A story of resilience that spans three countries, connected by the common thread of consumerism, seeking to give breath back to both the ocean and humankind. A film that invites reflection on our actions and their consequences, urging viewers to reconsider the bond between humans and the sea.
