S1 pupils from Castlebrae Community High School were introduced to paintings and sculptures of well-known local Scottish-Italian artist Eduardo Paolozzi. This is part of a partnership project; Transnationalizing Modern Languages which explores the issues of culture and identity in artistic media. This involves interdisciplinary collaboration between the school departments of Art, Social Subjects and Modern languages.
Pupils also discussed identity and immigration in Scotland, as well as learning basic Italian phrases. They created the exhibited prints by an Italian printmaking technique called ‘Intaglio’ which involves the artist carving out the material before inking up the plate before producing repeat prints. Several of the pupils who produced the prints translate English into their first language everyday day and understand the issues surrounding translation and have produced some fantastic expressive work as a result.
