The Battle of Algiers by Gillo Pontecorvo
27.02.2026 | 10:30 | Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT 1)
Gillo Pontecorvo’s influential antiwar classic charts the protracted struggle by Algerian revolutionaries against Algeria’s French occupiers between 1954 and 1957. Shot on location with a largely non-professional cast, who had lived-in experience of the conflict, it is based on the memoir of National Liberation Front (FLN) leader Saadi Yacef, who appears in the film. The winner of Venice’s Golden Lion in 1966 and initially banned in France, The Battle Of Algiers is driven by a neorealist verve and remains one of the most potent films about colonialism and resistance. It also features a notable score made in collaboration with Ennio Morricone.
Arabic, French, Spanish, with English subtitles.
