The Tradition of the actor-author in Italian Theatre

Edited by Donatella Fisher

XIII WORLD ITALIAN LANGUAGE WEEK – Research, Discovery, Innovation: Italy & Knowledge

The centrality of the actor-author constitutes a distinctive characteristic of Italian theatre which, historically, has been based primarily based on performance. It is this unique aspect of Italian theatre which distinguishes it sharply from other theatrical traditions. This broad-ranging volume brings together critical essays spanning the period from the Renaissance to the present. It takes as starting point Castiglione, Ruzante and the commedia dell’arte, surveys the works of Dario Fo, De Filippo and Bene among others, and includes essays on contemporary Neapolitan and Sicilian theatre as well as on the new ‘narrative theatre’, where the actor-author places himself centre-stage in a solo performance.

Dr Donatella Fisher will be in conversation with Prof. Joseph Farrell.

Donatella Fischer is a Lecturer in Italian at the University of Glasgow. Her publications include a study of the theatre of Eduardo De Filippo (Legenda, 2007) and articles on the literature and theatre of Trieste.
