Energy and Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities towards Net-Zero

The main objective of the event is to discuss the ongoing energy transition from conventional fossil fuels to clean energy: the Scottish and Italian perspectives, ahead of COP26, which will take place in Glasgow under UK Presidency, in partnership with Italy. Talks will include market penetration of technologies of the future; current/future demand; link to policy and energy justice.

As Scotland has set the ambitious target of net-zero emissions by 2045 and Glasgow and then Edinburgh set targets to become carbon neutral cities by 2030, this rapid chain of events and the ongoing pandemic call for clear pathways to accelerate the transition to clean, affordable and resilient energy systems as part of a green economy recovery.

In February 2021, the Italian long-term strategy on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions was sent to the EU Commission. In April 2021, the European Council and the European Parliament's negotiators reached a provisional political agreement setting into law the objective of a climate-neutral EU by 2050.

The speakers of Energy and Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities towards Net-Zero have successfully worked, in different roles, to make the dialogue between industry and academia successful:

David Pearson, Group Sustainable Development Director - Star Refrigeration Ltd and Director-Star Renewable Energy. He has worked in the vapour compression industry for more than 22 years and has a detailed understanding of high temperature ammonia applications and industrial processes.

Eliano Russo, representative of Enel, based in Rome. He is responsible for Global e-Industries of Enel X aimed to maximize sustainable energy transitions and decarbonisation process solutions for commercial and industrial purposes

Luca Bragoli, Chief Public Affairs & Regulatory Officer of the ERG Group, a leading renewables operator in Italy which is growing overseas, including the UK. From 2020, he is also Vice-president of ANEV, Italian Wind Energy Association (international affairs), member of the Board of Directors of WindEurope and Chair of the WindEurope Markets and Regulation Working group.

Nicolo’ Aggogeri, Managing Director of Eni UK Limited (a subsidiary of Eni S.p.A., a global energy company headquartered in Italy). He has more than 20 years in oil & gas industry with experience of general management, operations and project management.

Chaired and moderated by Gioia Falcone, Rankine Chair, Professor of Energy Engineering and Andrea Cammarano, University of Glasgow
