Italian Excellence. The New Generation of Italian Children’s Illustrators

Exhibition extended until 31 December.

The Italian Contemporary Art Week (8-14 October) and the Week of Italian Language in the World (17 – 22 October) meet at the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh for an explosion of colours, words and images dedicated to the youngest generations.

After the worldwide success of the two “Italian Excellence” exhibitions – “Illustration for Children. Italian Excellence” and “Illustrators for Gianni Rodari: Italian Excellence” – which toured a total of over thirty countries, Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation promote Italian children’s illustration with a new “Excellence” exhibition, this time looking at the latest generation of Italian illustrators of children’s books.

The exhibition “ITALIAN EXCELLENCE. THE NEW GENERATION OF ITALIAN CHILDREN’S ILLUSTRATORS” presents work by twenty of the most promising young Italian illustrators: Giacomo Agnello Modica, Andrea Antinori, Michael Bardeggia, Beatrice Cerocchi, Marianna Coppo, Francesca Corso, Cecilia Ferri, Chiara Ficarelli, Marta Pantaleo, Giulia Pastorino, Irene Penazzi, Alice Piaggio, Camilla Pintonato, Michelangelo Rossato, Veronica Ruffato, Lorenzo Sangió, Francesca Sanna, Luca Tagliafico, Giulia Tomai, Veronica Truttero. Sometimes their work goes beyond the traditional confines of the book to cover whole walls, or become posters. Their work can be found in magazines, or is self-published on the web. One artist has been shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal; many are among those selected for the Illustrators Exhibition of Bologna Children’s Book Fair; others have just started out in the challenging world of children’s publishing.

Every artist is represented by illustrations created using the technique of their choice: manual, digital or mixed. Their different techniques and poetic visions interpret the classics – from fairy stories to Dante – producing new and surprising proposals for the publishing world. Mastery of their art form, originality and experience will make them future landmarks in the history of Italian illustration.

Exhibition curated by Cooperativa Giannino Stoppani/Accademia Drosselmeier.

Bologna Children’s Book Fair/BolognaFiere is the world’s premier copyright trade show for books and content for children and young adults. Of the many specialist sectors covered, illustration is top of the list. Since 1967, the Book Fair has organized the Illustrators Exhibition, which after the Bologna show, travels to many venues all over the world on a tour lasting over two years. Numerous other initiatives are also organized around illustration and presented in several countries. We also work with international partners on specialist themes connected with the illustration of children’s books.

Cooperativa Giannino Stoppani/Accademia Drosselmeier has been a key player in the promotion and dissemination of children’s books and reading for more than 35 years, organizing meetings, workshops, presentations, art and book exhibitions. Over the years, the Cooperative has worked with many authors and artists from Italy and elsewhere, and partnered Italian public and private organizations in many parts of Italy such as Ravenna, Biella, Arezzo, Rome, Turin, and Naples. At the international level, it also partners organizations and trade shows in Paris, Munich, Moscow, San Francisco, Sau Paolo, Buenos Aires, Shanghai, and Taipei.
