Non dimenticare gli angeli (Don’t Forget the Angels) is an anthology from 30 years of Gaelic poems by Christopher Whyte (Crìsdean MacIlleBhàin) with facing translations into Italian. It won the Premio Rilke 2023 and was launched at a prizegiving ceremony in Duino Castle on the last day of September. This is the first time ever an entire book in Scottish Gaelic has been published in Italy. It therefore marks an important milestone in getting readers on the continent acquainted with contemporary Scottish writing.
The first book of poems in Gaelic by Christopher Whyte (Crìsdean MacIlleBhàin 1952-) was joint winner with Jackie Kay of a Saltire Award when it appeared in 1991. His tenth collection, Athair / Father, will appear in 2024. After a distinguished academic career teaching Scottish and Gaelic literature in Rome, Edinburgh and Glasgow, he moved in 2006 to Budapest, Hungary where he writes full-time. His work is characterised by its innovative, at times provocative, subject-matter, and by the resolute adoption of a European perspective. He is also the author of four novels in English and the translator into English of Pier Paolo Pasolini, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Marina Tsvetaeva.
