"My heart is the first name of the foreigner" - A talk by Massimo Recalcati

Data:

10/02/2023

We are delighted to welcome a leading figure in the Italian cultural debate, Massimo Recalcati, for the talk "My heart is the first name of the foreigner" on Friday, 10th February at 5.30pm at the University of Edinburgh (Screening Room, 50 George Square).

Massimo Recalcati is one of the most renowned Italian psychoanalysts, a public intellectual and a prolific author. Starting from the recent translation of his book The Temptation of the Wall: Five Short Lessons on Civil Life (2020/222), Recalcati will discuss the meaning of the foreigner at a time of strong European narratives of national identification, when boundaries are becoming barriers, hate and fear take over dialogue. The psychoanalyst will shed some light on these social changes and he will try to open up new perspectives, in which borders become a permeable space.

The talk will be in Italian with consecutive translation.

Massimo Recalcati is a psychoanalyst, essayist and writer. He is a member of the Milanese Society of Psychoanalysis (SMP), founder of Jonas - Centre of Psychoanalytic Clinical Practice for New Symptoms and Scientific Director of the IRPA School of Specialisation in Psychotherapy in Milan. He teaches at the University of Verona and at IULM in Milan. Since 2003, he has been director and teacher of the specialisation course at the Milan headquarters of the non-profit organization he founded in 2003, Jonas. He is currently a clinical supervisor in eating disorders at the Gruber Centre in Bologna. He currently writes for the cultural pages of La Repubblica and La Stampa. He has been editor of the Eredi series for Feltrinelli since 2014. Since 2020, he is co-director with Maurizio Balsamo of the magazine Frontiere della psicoanalisi, published by Il Mulino. His many publications have been translated into several languages.

The event is organized by Davide Messina (University of Edinburgh), Diego Zanelli (British Psychological Society), and the Italian Institute of Culture, Edinburgh, with the support of the Consulate General of Italy, Edinburgh. In collaboration with Lacan in Scotland (Calum Neill, Edinburgh Napier University).
