Europa, Our First Migrant – Touring Scotland

Replico Productions

Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013

Europe our first Migrant is a brand new play, drawing on the Greek myth, ‘The Rape of Europa”. The play rewrites the myth, exploring what it means to be Europeans today in a continent undergoing massive changes. In an often surprising interplay between past and present, a modern-day Europa and Zeus undertake the journey of the mythical figures from Phoenicia (present-day Lebanon) to Crete, ending up in Scotland. While the sea trip proves perilous, involving a fierce battle with Poseidon, King of the Sea, and a pernicious squad of Tritons, Europa’s arrival is no less disconcerting. She discovers that her new country is very different from the amazing Fantarcadia she had dreamt of.

Europa our First Migrant by Salvatore Cabras in an English version and prologue by Maggie Rose, is directed by Joe Gallagher and produced by Glasgow’s Replico company.

The play will be performed at the Italian Cultural Institute, 82 Nicolson Street, on the 23 and 24 August at 5pm, after which it will embark on a two-week island and Highland tour. The production is funded by Creative Scotland, with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute, Edinburgh.
