On the occasion of the 24th edition of Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo (Week of the Italian Language in the World), the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh is delighted to invite you to SWG3 in Glasgow on 18th October 2024 at 17:30 for a conversation with the Italian writer Vanni Santoni dedicated to the themes of his latest novel, Dilaga Ovunque (Laterza, 2023).

Through his experience with graffiti and street art, in Dilaga Ovunque (It Speads Everywhere), Santoni explores their origins and their relationship with the history of ‘official’ art. Starting at 17:30, event guests will be able to experience a live painting session by two local street artists, Guzler and Jpeg, at Yardworks Studio, before the event moves to the Zinc Bar, where Vanni Santoni will discuss its book and beyond in conversation with Gary Mackay, director of Yardworks.

Vanni Santoni (1978) has published, among others, the novels Gli interessi in comune (Feltrinelli 2008), Se fossi fuoco arderei Firenze (Laterza 2011), the saga of Terra ignota (Mondadori 2012-17), Muro di casse (Laterza 2015), La stanza profonda (Laterza 2017, Premio Strega candidate), I fratelli Michelangelo (Mondadori 2019), La verità su tutto (Mondadori 2022, Premio Viareggio selezione della giuria) and Dilaga ovunque (Laterza 2023, a finalist of Premio Campiello 2024) as well as the essay La scrittura non si insegna (Minimum Fax 2020). He writes for ‘Corriere della Sera’, ‘Linus’ and ‘Internazionale’.

SWG3 is a former warehouse converted into multifunctional event spaces in the west of Glasgow. In recent years, it has become the epicentre of a new and vibrant street arts district with Yardworks, its project promoting urban art, graffiti and design through an annual festival, exhibitions and Scotland’s first purpose-built street arts studio.

The Week of the Italian Language in the World is an event that has been held since 2001 and that over time has become one of the most important initiatives dedicated to the celebration of the Italian language internationally. Since its establishment, the initiative has been awarded each year High Patronage by the Presidency of the Republic. Each Week is dedicated to a different theme, which serves as a common thread for a rich programme of conferences, exhibitions and meetings around the world. Scheduled from 14th to 20th October 2024, the 2024 edition is dedicated to ‘L’italiano e il libro: il mondo fra le righe’ (Italian and the Book: the World between the Lines), aiming to explore the link between language and literature in the contemporary world, highlighting the role of the book as a vehicle of Italian cultural heritage, values and identity.

The conversation will be in English.
