O Oriens is one of seven antiphones of the Advent, sang as motets, from the Cyprus Code. A 15th century manuscript, the Code is a collection of anonymous music influenced by the French Ars Nova – the court was French-Cypriot before the Venetians conquered the island in 1489.The piece is an imaginary dialogue between the anonymous composers of Cyprus and Matteo da Perugia, who was the first magister capellae in Milan’s Duomo Cathedral.
