Murder Made in Italy: the New Italian Noir

The talk will focus on the new wave of giallisti and noir Italian writer who since the 1990s have risen to public and critical acclaim in Italy and abroad. What are the roots of Italian detective and noir fiction? Why did this popular genre have difficult beginnings? What historical and cultural factors can help us now to frame its contemporary literary prominence? What is the role of translations and television in turning murder made in Italy into a global success story? These are some of the question that will be addressed in this illustrated talk that will chart the rise to fame of a number of contemporary Italian writers both at home and abroad.

Giuliana Pieri is Reader in Italian and the Visual Arts at Royal Holloway, London. Her research interests include visual culture in the 20th century, comparative literature and culture from the 19th to 21st centuries, modern Italian literature, especially the 21C detective novel. She is the author of Italian Crime Fiction, the first study in the English language on Italian detective and noir fiction from the Fascist period to the present day.
