Italian writer and journalist Caterina Soffici will present her book Nessuno può fermarmi (Feltrinelli, 2017), in conversation with Prof Federica Pedriali (Italian Department of the University of Edinburgh).
Bartolomeo searches for the true story surrounding his grandfather Bart, supposedly killed on the front during World War II. Bartolomeo accidentally discovers the forgotten history of a tragic shipwreck, the Arandora Star, torpedoed by a German submarine on 2nd July 1940. Over 700 men lost their lives, 446 of them Italian civilian internees being deported by the British government after Mussolini’s declaration of war on Great Britain. Was Grandfather Bart involved in this terrible tragedy? This is a wonderful novel about how family memory can both obscure and reveal the truth of historic events.
The book will also be presented in Glasgow, at the Scottish Universities Insight Institute, Collins Building, 22 Richmond St, G1 1XQ where Caterina Soffici will be in conversation with Dr Katharine Mitchell (University of Strathclyde) on 3rd November at 12 noon.
Caterina Soffici was born in Florence and lives in London. Nessuno può fermarmi is her first novel. With Feltrinelli she also published the bestseller Ma le donne no (2010) and Italia Yes Italia No (2014). She writes for the Italian newspaper “La Stampa” and for “Vanity Fair”.
The event is organized by Dr Carlo Pirozzi and Professor Federica Pedriali, who also lead The Italo-Scottish Research Cluster (ISRC) at the Italian Department of University of Edinburgh.
ISRC is the first cluster in UK to research Italian immigration in Scotland, establish an Online Archive, promote relations between Scotland and Italy and develop creative interdisciplinary art projects.
