Francesco Martinelli is a leading figure in Italy’s jazz scene, serving as a promoter, journalist, translator, and researcher. For EJBF24, he presents a fascinating talk on the evolution of Italian jazz, exploring the relationship between swing and Italy’s melodic traditions of opera and Neapolitan songs. Francesco will take you from the origins of the music through to modern day, where the burgeoning jazz scene has fostered successive generations of musicians inspired by pioneers like Giorgio Gaslini, Enrico Rava, Gianluigi Trovesi, and Bruno Tommaso. Selected recordings and visual materials will help trace the rich cultural roots and development of jazz in Italy.
