Ohi, Ninarieddo, ti ricordi di quel sogno…
di cui abbiamo parlato tante volte…
Io ero in macchina, e partivo solo, col sedile
vuoto accanto a me,e tu mi correvi dietro;
all’altezza dello sportello ancora semiaperto,
correndo ansioso e ostinato, mi gridavi
con un po’ di pianto infantile nella voce:
“A Pa’, mi porti con te? Me lo paghi il viaggio?”
Era il viaggio della vita.

Ehy, Ninarieddo, remember that dream,
the one we talked about so many times…?
I was in my car, heading off alone, the seat
beside me empty, and you were running after me;
when you reached the still half-open door,
anxious and stubbornly running, you cried out
with a childish sort of whine in your voice:
“Hey, Paolo, can you take me with you? Will you pay my way?”
It was the journey of life.

Pier Paolo Pasolini, The Selected Poetry of Pier Paolo Pasolini: A Bilingual Edition, ed. and trans. Stephen Sartarelli (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 2014), 380-381
On the special occasion of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 100th anniversary, we are delighted to welcome to Edinburgh actor Ninetto Davoli. He was one of Pasolini’s dearest friends and an iconic presence in his cinema.
With his unruly smile and curly hair, Ninetto (as he is affectionately known) embodied the pure and irrepressible joy of the popular life. First cast as an extra in The Gospel According to Matthew (1964), he starred in many of Pasolini’s films, including Hawks and Sparrows (1966), Oedipus Rex (1967), Theorem (1968), Che cosa sono le nuvole? (1968), La sequenza del fiore di carta (1969), Pigsty (1969), The Decameron (1971), The Canterbury Tales (1972).
In this conversation, Ninetto will take us on a journey through the memories of his friendship and work with Pasolini. Mr Davoli will be in conversation with Prof. Davide Messina and Dr Emanuela Patti (in Italian with English translation).
Preceeded by some readings of Pasolini’s poetry by Lucinda Byatt and Giorgio Granozio.
