Simonetta Agnello Hornby

We are delighted to welcome best-selling UK-based Italian author Simonetta Agnello Hornby, in conversation with Victor Contini, talking about her relationship with Sicilian culinary traditions and the important role that these traditions have played in her novels.

Simonetta Agnello Hornby was born in Palermo, where in 1968 she obtained a law degree. She was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Kansas; Since her marriage in 1967 has lived in the USA, Zambia and, from 1970, in England. She has lived in London for over 45 years, working as a family law lawyer. In 1979 she co-founded Hornby & Levy, the first law firm specialized in cases of violence in the family context, which in 1997 published The Caribbean’s Children Law Project, a study still of primary importance in the field. She served as Chair of the Special Educational Needs and Persons with Disabilities Tribunal for eight years. Her first book The Almond Picker (Penguin) was an international best seller, translated in twelve languages, winner of many literary awards. In addition, she has published on Italian gastronomy and culinary traditions.

Victor Contini, an Italian Scot, has equal passion for his family Italian heritage and the joy of their choice to live in Scotland. Victor married Carina almost 30 years ago and their joint love of sharing good food with friends and family is the foundation of their family and business values. Their first restaurant at Contini George Street, after leaving the family business, is committed to celebrating their Italian heritage. Slow food values are their values.
